The Sphynx cat is not the result of
genetic manipulations. The responsible gene for the
hairless of the Sphynx is the recessive hereditary
alopecia.
In 1966 a domestic cat gave birth to
a hairless kitten in Ontario, Canada.
The same happened with the next
litter and these naturally hairless cats started a new
breed , first called the Moon Cats, then the Hairless
Canadian and finally the SPHYNX.
Many cat breeders all over the world
started working on the new breed in order to define the
characteristics and tried successive cross-breeds with
other breeds (Devon-Rex, Cornish-Rex and the American
Shorthair). The cross-breeding with Devon-Rex was
abandoned due to a fatal disease called « Spaticity »
Nowadays the Sphynx is a robust breed
with no health problems , thanks to honest breeders who
love this particular breed.
